Exact specifications such as file size, dimensions and format are set by the official portal and can change. Use this list to prepare, then confirm the details on the form.

  • A suitable Malaysian passport: At least six months of validity when you apply, and two blank pages for the immigration officer.
  • A passport-style photo: Recent, square (equal height and width), plain light background, in JPEG format and within the portal’s file-size limits.
  • A scan of your passport bio page: A clear PDF of the page with your photo and details, within the size range shown on the portal.
  • Return or onward travel: A confirmed ticket into India and a return or onward ticket, with enough funds for your stay.
  • Payment method and email: A card or online-banking option for any fee, and an email address you can access to receive updates.
  • Category-specific documents: Business, medical and conference applicants may need a business card, hospital letter or invitation.

Passport rules

According to the official guidance, your passport should have at least six months of validity when you apply and at least two blank pages for the immigration stamp. If you are close to that limit, renew first.

Names, passport number and dates in the form must match your passport exactly. Small typing errors are a frequent reason for delays.

When to apply

The portal states that e-Tourist and e-Business applicants should apply at least 4 days before arrival. The earliest date you can apply depends on the category. Leave extra time in case the authorities ask for clarifications, and avoid booking non-refundable travel until your approval arrives.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the wrong category for the purpose of your trip.
  • Uploading a photo or passport scan that does not meet the portal’s rules.
  • Planning to arrive at a port that is not on the e-Visa entry list.
  • Assuming the e-Visa can be extended once you are in India.
  • Using a look-alike website instead of the official portal.

What to carry on arrival

Keep a printed or offline copy of your approval, your passport, proof of onward or return travel and your accommodation details. Immigration officers make the final decision on entry.
